Lupin
ABOUT THE PLANT: Lupin (Genus Lupinus L.) as a very polymorphic combines many species. The four species of lupin are used in agriculture: narrowleaf (blue), yellow, white and perennial.
Lupin is a valuable forage and green culture. It has a high content of protein – 30-48% and fat up to 14%. Lupine species are divided into alkaloid (bitter), slightly alkaloid (0,2-0,3%) and non-alkaloid (<0,0025%). The two last groups can be fed to livestock, seeds as well as green mass. The yield of green mass is 350-400 centner/he, can reach 600 centner/he, of grain – 25-30 centner/he and more.
Lupin is the best nitrogen fixer of all legumes. One hectare of lupine field accumulate up to 180 kg of symbiotic nitrogen. That’s why lupine is widely used as a green manure. Lupine is a biological ameliorant which improves physical and chemical qualities of soil, increases fertility of poor soils. Lupin is a moderately thermophilic plant. All species of lupine are demanding to moisture. During germination the seeds absorb 2-3 times more water than the seeds of grain crops. All species of lupine are light-loving with a clearly displayed heliotropism. In case of shading the plants develop badly and don’t produce full-grown seeds. The optimum acidity – pH 5,0-5,6.
It is better to place lupin after cereals. In light and sandy soils. Due to the slow growth and weed suppression between the germination and budding phases, the main task of basic and presowing treatment is the weed destruction. The most common method of sowing – an ordinary row with C3T-3,6 seed drill. In weeded fields it is sown with a wide-row method (45 cm) using vegetable seed drills. Unanimous and full shoots of lupin are obtained by enfolding the seeds to a depth 3-4 cm, in heavy soils – 2-3 cm. The seeding rate with an ordinary sowing method is 180-200 kg/he. With a wide-row sowing method seeding rate is decreased to 80-120 kg/he. The optimal terms for lupine sowing – the end of first five-day period from the beginning of sowing of early spring crops.
IMPLEMENTATION: Our company offers to purchase lupine seeds of the following sorts for a good price: Serpneviy, Dieta.
Sort Serpneviy
The sort is added to the Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine in 2006. Created by hybridization (line 2101 × 2247 line), followed by individual selection on the basis of precocity.
The sort refers to a soon ripening group (vegetative period 100-105 days), allowing you to gather crop in Steppes and Polesie (wood land) in late August without further drying and may be a precursor to winter crops. The sort is resistant to Fusarium. Seeds are white with a cream shade, round, “sail” of a flowers is light –lilac with a white spot, green leaves, lanceolate shape, stunted plants. Harvest of seed is mostly provided by the mean of central seed and is 3,9-4,0 t / ha. Protein content in grain – 39.9%, oil – 11.2%, alkaloids in grain – 0.015%, in the green weight – 0.009%. Weight of 1000 seeds – 340-350 g. The plant is recommended for cultivation of grain and green mass in areas of steppes and Polesie (wood land) of Ukraine.
Sort Dieta
The sort is added to the Register of plant varieties of Ukraine in 2004. Created by individual selection on infectious background of white lupine varieties Ukrainian.
Seeds are of white cream color, rounded-angular, weight of 1000 seeds is 330-360 g. “Sail” of a flower is blue, flowers with a white spot, paddle of a flower is blue with blue-black tip, flower cup is brown-green. Cones on the side shoots are almost on a par with inflorescence on the main addition. The leaves are green.
The sort refers to a soon ripening group, the vegetative period – 105-110 days. Central stem is durable, resistant to lodging. High-grade, potential grain yield – 4.2 t / ha of green mass (dry matter) – 10.5 t / ha. Resistant to Fusarium and viral diseases. Digestible protein content in grain – 39%, in the green mass (dry matter) – 20%, fat in corn – 11,7-12,0%, alkaloids in cereals – 0,009%, in the green mass – 0.007%, pectin 10.3%, low content of trypsin inhibitors.
Simultaneous ripening is typical for grain on the main brush and side shoots, which provides earliness and high quality grains. Dieta sort can be used for cooking food.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT LUPINE:
1. Lupine is also known under the name “wolf beans ” in Latin, due to its endurance and the ability to absorb these substances and enrich soil with nutrients.
2. Lupine is known in the world in ancient times. In ancient Greece it was used as decoration blossoms in the tomb of Pharaoh.
3. The area of spreading of lupine is pretty wide. The flower can grow not only on the same level with sea, but even 4800 meters above it and even higher. Moreover those plants which are growing in mountains sometimes reach four meters in height.
4. Quality of lupine seed oil is close to olive one. But it differs in the way of absence of substances that slow down digestion.
5. In addition to ornamental and agricultural purposes lupine is used in medicine, pharmacology, as well as feed for fish.
6. Process of lupine begun 4,000 years ago in Egypt, ancient Greece, the Roman Empire.
