08_tonkonigABOUT THE PLANT: Meadow grass is a perennial plant. The species belong to the genus Lunell, family Cereals, it is forage grass and it is one of the earliest cereals. Meadow grass adopts to the conditions of New Zealand and Australia, growing in fields, meadows and forest edges. It is able to grow in different soils, even on sandy ones. It is resistant to climatic conditions.

The plant is characterized by underground and creeping shoots, which sometimes form a fairly loose and thick turf. The height of the stems is from 30 to 90 cm, leaves 3.5-4 mm wide, narrowly linear, flat, slightly rough or smooth. The length of the tongue – 0,7-2,2 mm, length 20 cm panicle, pyramidal or oblong, with rough branches that sit with 3-5 pieces. The length of ears – 3,5-6 mm, ovoid, composed of 2-5 flowers, green color, sometimes purple. Maximum development achieved in the second and third year of life. Flowering takes place just once a year, but can give the second slope due to favorable conditions.
Meadow grass is very valuable plant for fresh and dry meadows and pastures, which is sown in a mixture with different forage grasses, and its content in the mixture is less than 10%. Meadow grass germination starts in 7-8 days after sowing.
Yield of seeds begins in July and August, prior to their maturity. All the seeds very easily slips into small lumps due to long hair that covers the sides and back of the seed. Hayes from these plants is rich in proteins. Being fresh or dry cattle will gladly eat it. The average yield of hay from 1 ha is 1.6 tons. In addition meadow grass is good for grazing.
Meadow grass is a great lawn grass, perfectly resistant to cold and low temperatures. Grows best on moist soils, very resistant to trampling. If not to water during the heat the stem can be a bit burnt. Resistant to various diseases. Meadow grass forms a dense ground grass cover which is rich, has good green color and excellent quality. It stops to grow in November, for winter it is often still green.
To create lawns in different climatic zones they use meadow grass with other grasses, such as meadow fescue, red, bent grass, ryegrass, and others. For planting and strengthening slopes it is often advised to use a mixture of meadow grass and red fescue. The resulting mixture of them is good to grow in almost all conditions, different soils. Sort Balin
The sort refers to a group of medium-strong rooting and early flowering. Endurance has been proven for years using in Europe where it is the most common kind of meadow grass. Sort Baron is one of the original dwarf-forms of meadow grass. It is widely used with other kinds of meadow grass for mixtures for sowing fields of rolled lawns, home lawns. This sort quickly rises and its sprouts are very resistant, medium width leaves, bright green turf of excellent quality, suitable for low cut. Aggressive sort- squeezes weeds, it is resistant to heat and drought, it has an extensive system of thick basal shoots.
